Shri Krishna’s father’s name was Vasudeva and mother’s name was Devaki. Devaki’s eighth child will destroy Kansha. Frightened by such a prophecy, Kansa sent Devaki and Vasudev to jail. Then Devaki gave birth to Shri Krishna at midnight on the eighth of Shravan month. Then Vasudeva came to Nanda Raja’s house in Gokul to save Krishna from Kansha. so, Janmashtami is also called Gokulashtami.
